Spencer, Stanley 1891 - 1959. English painter. He was born and lived in Cookham-on-Thames, Berkshire, and recreated the Christian story in a Cookham setting. His detailed, dreamlike compositions had little regard for perspective and used generalized human figures in a highly original manner. Knighted 1959. Examples are Christ Carrying the Cross 1920 and Resurrection: Cookham 1923-27 (both Tate Gallery, London) and murals of army life for the oratory of All Souls' at Burghclere, Berkshire.
